Gypsum on Shale

Seawater evaporate mineral, gypsum, in between caked layers of shale sedimentary rock. Gypsum is often used as a fertilizer due to its high content of calcium and and sulphur, and its ability to increase drainage in clay soils by increasing particle size (also decreases susceptibility of soil erosion).

–Gypsum may relieve the Ca-deprived serpentine soils common throughout California.
